Quinn at the Beach
12×16Acrylic on Canvas2024Private Collection When painting a pet portrait, I like to let brush strokes flow loose and free through much of the painting while focusing more tightly as I close in on the most vital and expressive feature — the eyes. This is why I like to work from multiple references, to capture the…

Suzanne’s Place
Oil on Canvas A gift for a friend. I love how the landscape and the house flow together so harmoniously, and this view made such a serene composition.

Cooper
Last week, I asked everyone for pictures of Cape Cod dogs doing Cape Cod things, and I received so many wonderful pictures that it was hard to decide which to paint. But when I saw the picture of Cooper standing at the beach, dripping wet and smiling as the late-day sun stretched shadows across the…

We want to thank the 16 intrepid people who braved the weather to paint portraits of the lovely 1886 replica flagship catboat, Sarah, with us! It was a great night — everyone…

HAPPY HOLIDAYS, Cape Cod Style
Well done, Eastham! THIS is superb Holiday decorating. I was hoping the light would be right as I passed, and I was thrilled to catch it just at the golden hour, surrounded by the warm tones of the setting sun… So beautiful! It’s even prettier in the dark — I’ll have to try to get…

Aaaand the photos are in from last week’s awesome paint party at Captain Baker Donuts in Dennis! It is such a lovely space to work in; so bright and light, and the food is fantastic! We painted “Winter Star,” and everyone did a phenomenal job! It was so nice seeing our old friends (we love…

Soybeanz, in four steps
Acrylic on canvas12×162023 This adorable mix of cuteness was strolling down Smuggler’s Beach with those ears streaming in the wind — she was too irresistible, and I knew I had to paint that happy face. And this time, I took photos as the painting came together, which gave an unintentionally humorous glimpse into my work…

Cape-Abil-A-Bog
Acrylic on canvas12×162023 Off Route 28, down behind the Cape-Abilities Thrift Shop there’s a beautiful cranberry bog with trails you can walk while the harvest is going on. My friends and I refer to that as the Cape-Abil-A-Bog, and on the particular day I was walking with the dogs, this aluminum boat was drifting in…

Two Goldens in an old Whaler
Oil on canvas12×162023 It doesn’t get any more quintessentially Cape Cod than two happy old dogs in an old Boston Whaler. I was fishing last summer when I saw this idling past and thought, “That’s my kind of painting.”

Wrong Exit
Sometimes, when you’re traveling, you take the wrong exit. On one particular day, as I was about to U-turn and get back on course, I spotted this lovely home. There was an empty parking space across the street, and I quickly set up my paints and captured the light and shadows defining the stunning architecture.

Random Sketch: The Getaway Car
You don’t see this every day. Apparently, this Buick sat hidden within a barn from some point in the 1930s, with bullet holes in the back end. This car has seen things.

Random Sketch: MK1 and more
Another little MK1, lime green in this case, spotted outside the health food store. It reminded me of the one my mom had years ago — lots of good memories of that car, and it cemented my love for Golfs.

Shift Happens: 2013 2-door GTI
I took some extra time with this because this little beauty is my personal ride and favorite car of all time. Got Clutch?

Random Sketch: At the Tire Place
My little car was in for new treads and an alignment when I spotted this classic parked around back. It had beach stickers going back decades.

Random Sketch: Mustang, Fairmont, others
Feeling silly. It’s just art. I can’t take it that seriously. Do Mustangs dream? And boxy IS sexy.
